When thinking about backing-up your data there are three main scenarios to consider. The '3 disk system', featured right, is the only system that ensures you are covered in all of these scenarios and should be adhered to ...

  • File Corruption - at any time the computer can corrupt your CheckPoint database files, rendering them unusable. The best way to prepare for this event is to do regular backups to another directory on your computer, especially after any major changes, such as adding new clients and sites or downloading data recorders.
  • Disk Crash - this is more serious and and will require a complete re-install of the CheckPoint software followed by copying over your backed-up data.
  • Computer Stolen/Destroyed in Fire - in this scenario it is vital that you have off-site backups.

We hope this page clarifies the situation regarding backing-up your CheckPoint data.

It is also vitally important that you back-up your data on a regular basis and your CheckPoint software will prompt you if you haven't backed-up in the last 7 days.

The 3 disk system ...

  1. Assign 3 blank floppy disks  and label them A, B and C.
  2. First backup to your own computers hard drive, either selecting a directory yourself or using the current CheckPoint directory.
  3. Then backup to one of the floppy disks, using the disks sequentially starting with A. Label each disk and add the date of backup, allowing you to keep the sequential order.Use each disk in rotation, keeping one backup disk off site at all times.

With the '3 disk system', the latest backup is never returned to site, eliminating the possibility of something happening to that backup.

As an extra precaution you may wish to make 2 copies at each back-up, just in case one of the floppy disks develops a fault and becomes unusable.
